Choosing a wedding photographer isn’t the easiest thing to do. Here is my list of everything you should be asking – and my answers. If there’s anything you can’t see, but are itching to ask me, get in touch,
How would you describe your style?
I would describe my style as relaxed and documentary. I prefer to be in the background, discreetly capturing all the moments that will make up your special day. I don’t do ‘big lighting’ and ‘huge set-ups’, this is your wedding day and not a fashion shoot. Having said that I also like to shoot more formal shots of the couple and wedding party – but I like to do this as informally and relaxed as I can.
What happens if you are ill on our wedding day
I’ve not been ill at a wedding yet, and it would also have to be something very serious for me not to able to make it. I’m in contact with several wedding photographers who work together to cover for each over in the event of illness or unforeseen circumstances.
Are you insured?
I’m fully insured for Professional indemnity and Public Liability, many venues insist on this.
Are you part of any professional organisation?
I’m a member of the Guild of Wedding Photographers and follow their code of conduct.
What if your camera breaks?
I always shoot weddings with two cameras, and also carry a spare just in case. In addition to this I have spare batteries, memory cards and flashes. I even carry a sowing kit!
I don’t photograph well and don’t want to pose for pictures
This is a common concern as the last time most of us had a professional photograph taken was at school. All my wedding packages include a pre-wedding/engagement shoot, where we will go through some simple relaxed poses aimed at making you comfortable in front of the camera. The majority of my coverage isn’t posed anyway, just simple natural shots throughout the day.
What happens if it rains on my wedding day?
I always have backup indoor locations in case of rainy days and I carry a range of lighting to make sure these shots look fantastic. I also bring several large white umbrellas if you want to venture out! Rain shots can look amazing.
Are you going to charge me extra after the wedding?
No, I hate it when photographers start charging couples after the wedding. I provide all your wedding photos high resolution and fully retouched. Of course albums are extra, but everything is transparent and there are no hidden extras. You are free to print, send, email your photos.
Do you have photos of entire weddings that I can see?
Absolutely, I can give you access to a full online gallery
How many images will I get?
I will usually shoot 300-400 shots, fully retouched and high resolution.
Will my shots all be in colour?
The majority of shots will be in colour, but some images really do look better in black and white, and sometimes I even supply both colour and black and white.
How many hours of coverage will I get?
I’m not into the 8-12 hour package thing, you are getting married not parking your car. You get the whole day, from bridal preparation all the way through to first dance – and a bit more.
Wedding photography seems expensive, why is this?
Aside from the cost of equipment, insurance, etc., I work really hard at a wedding. I also spend a lot of time editing and retouching your shots so they are perfect, and when you are dealing with 300-400 shots this take time. Remember you will have your wedding photos forever.
How soon after the wedding will we see our shots?
I usually deliver shots within 2-3 weeks.
Will it be you that shoots the wedding?
Absolutely. The person you meet at the initial meeting is the person who will shoot your wedding ie. Me! If you have a larger scale wedding we may discuss coverage with an additional photographer.
Do you shoot groups shots and formal portraits?
Although my style I documentary and candid, I do like to shoot a small number of formal shots. I think these are a very important record of your family and friends (they are also the shots parents expect). I’ve found the best way to shoot these shots is for the couple to make a short list (about 8-10) of shots, and then nominate (in advance) a member of the wedding party to help assist in getting everyone together. I don’t like to keep guests standing around or taking people away from the wedding party for too long. I also take the couple away for 30-40 minutes for their formal photos. Again I don’t want to take you away from your wedding party for any longer any longer than needed.
Am I free to share my photos on Facebook?
Absolutely no problem – in fact I encourage you to do so. When I send your final photos I include a folder with all your images at low resolution ready for putting straight onto Facebook, Instagram or email.
Can you provide references?
No problem. I often end up as friends with many of my couples who will be glad to give you a reference.
How far will you travel to shoot a wedding?
I shoot all around Yorkshire and the North of England – but I will travel further if necessary.
Can you supply albums?
My background is in print and magazine design so I’m passionate about my albums. The albums I offer are hand made, leather bound and finished to a very high standard.
Great. What do we do now?
Get in touch, and we’ll meet up (the coffees are on me) and we’ll have a chat about your plans for your wedding.
